Heggies was engaged by the Rail Infrastructure Corporation (RIC) to conduct ambient air quality monitoring for the Chatswood (RIC-A2) section of the Parramatta Rail Link Project. This monitoring program includes the sampling and analysis of both dust deposition and PM10.
Heggies commenced work on this project in May 2003 and it is anticipated that the monitoring will be ongoing for three years. The objectives of the air quality monitoring are:* To assist in ensuring that standards during the civil works comply with the Minister's Conditions of Approval, the Department of the Environment and Conservation (DEC) Licence, Principal's requirements and other relevant Authority conditions, and;* To compile relevant information in a manner which will provide ongoing guidance to all parties regarding work planning and emissions control. The monitoring program includes the sampling and analysis of both dust deposition and PM10. Dust deposition is monitored because of its potential nuisnace impact and the PM10 component is being monitored because it has implications for human health. All of the ambient air samples for this project are collected in accordance with the appropriate air quality and sampling standards including: * AS 3580.10.1 1991 "Methods for Sampling and Analysis of Ambient Air - Determination of Particulates - Deposited Matter - Gravimetric Method";* AS 3580.9.6 1990 "Methods for Sampling and Analysis of Ambient Air - Determination of Suspended Particulate Matter - PM (sub) 10 High Volume Air Sampler with selective size inlet - Gravimetric Method";* AS2922-1987 "Ambient Air - Guide for the Siting of Sampling Units";* NSW Department of Environment and Conservation "Approved Methods for the Sampling and Analysis of Air Pollutants in New South Wales", 2001; and* National Environmental Protection Council, "National Environmental Protection Measure for Ambient Air Quality", 1998.PM10 samples are collected using a High Volume Air Sampler (HVAS) with a size selective inlet. Sampling is done in accordance with the NSW DEC's 6-day run cycle over a 24-hour period . Dust deposition samples are collected using dust deposition gauges over a 30-day period (+/- 2 days).
