Air Quality Monitoring - Sydney Harbour Bridge Repainting

Heggies is conducting an ambient air quality monitoring programme during the repainting works of the Southern Approach of the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Heggies was commissioned by the Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) to conduct an Ambient Air Quality monitoring programme as part of the environmental monitoring program associated with the repainting works of the Southern Approach of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. These works involve removing existing lead-based paint and the application of a replacement high performance paint system to all steel members of the southern approach spans. Paint removal involves abrasive blast cleaning under enclosure conditions.

Air quality monitoring commenced in December 2002, with works expected to be completed in 2006. The objectives of the environmental monitoring are:

1. To ensure that staff, contractors, and the surrounding community and environment are not adversely affected by the removal of lead-containing paint from the Sydney Harbour Bridge Southern Approach Spans.
2. To assist in ensuring that standards of air quality, during the bridge refurbishment, comply with current standards and legislation.
3. To compile relevant information in a manner which will provide ongoing guidance to all parties regarding work planning and emissions control.

Ambient air quality samples are collected at three locations surrounding the blasting works, using a High Volume Air Sampler, with a Total Suspended Particulate (TSP) Hood. Samples are analysed at a NATA accredited laboratory for TSP and Lead.
