The focus of this project was to design a modern music training centre within the confines of the first floor of a 1940's building.
The building was originally designed for trade-based courses, and still contains woodworking, masonry and textiles operations that continue to operate concurrently with the studio. This demanded the development of building and fitout techniques providing superior acoustic isolation, while meeting modest budget constraints. The project was successful, with the design principles being embraced by the builder to deliver a music training centre that was constructed on budget and on time. This extended the commercial viability of the TAFE music courses, which now receive very strong support, both locally and internationally. This project has been adopted as the benchmark for all future music-related projects undertaken by the Department of Commerce (formerly the Department of Public Works and Services). The project received a high commendation at the Institution of Engineers Newcastle Division 2004 Engineering Excellence Awards.
