Ecologically Sustainable Design - Winmalee Shopping Village

Heggies investigated Ecologically Sustainable Development (ESD) design options for the Winmalee Shopping Village in the Blue Mountains, NSW.

The objective of this project was to provide advice to Coles Myer Ltd (CML) regarding the development of a retail shopping centre at Winmalee within the Blue Mountains, NSW.

Due to the location of the proposed development within a World Heritage area, CML were highly conscious of the appropriateness of applying Ecologically Sustainable Development (ESD) principles at Winmalee. They recognised the opportunity to create both a first class retail centre and an environmentally friendly development to serve the local community.

The ESD initiatives recommended for the development included:

- Measures to ensure the minimisation of waste generated during demolition and construction

- Provision of water conservation devices (waterless urinals, flow-limited inserts in taps, etc)

- Provision of supplementary natural ventilation to minimise/remove the air conditioning requirement for the mall area

- Specification of low Volatile Organic Compound materials to reduce the potential for hazardous out-gassing

- Use of naturally occurring gases for refrigeration plant to minimise greenhouse gas production and reduce global warming contributions

- Specification of sustainable timber types and maximisation of recycled content of construction materials; and

- Community consultation and involvement in the landscaping design process.
