Background
John is a qualified environmental earth scientist (Geology) with over 14 years experience in the environmental consulting industry. Prior to joining Heggies, John was Team Leader, Contaminated Land and Environmental Risk Management at SKM Perth.
John has provided consulting services to a wide range of industrial and local government clients focussing on the delivery of projects ranging from full scale plant closures, demolition and remediation, regulatory liaison, financial risk management, environmental auditing and due diligence audits and is committed to providing clients with comprehensive and pragmatic solutions to mitigating environmental risks to the satisfaction of key stakeholders.
John undertook several detailed environmental and financial risk assessment projects on behalf of a major international client, that incorporated the use of adapted lean six sigma management techniques, where value in engineering first principles were used to form the basis for detailed designing and implementation of remediation projects and enhanced the area of contractor management. The success of this mechanism for managing environmental projects has been used to further improvie the type of environmental management and planning used for the majority of high risk projects managed by John.

Selected Project Experience
Swan River Retaining Wall
Working with civil engineers John worked to develop a practical environmental management plan for the construction of piled retaining structures at a key location adjacent to the Swan River. This included a review of potential impacts from retained contaminated materials and management of the movement of sediment as part of the construction activities.
Jamaica, Caribbean – Project Director
For the closure of numerous bauxite residue ponds which has included the consideration of innovative restoration techniques and development of pilot studies to generate data on which to support these new techniques. Included in the work was the development of work method statements, management plans and very detailed community liaison and presentations of proposed works to local community groups and the general public. John worked closely with specialist social scientists and community consultation specialists to develop a level of consultation that mitigated potential confusion related to technical content of presented documents.
John worked closely with Alcan Bauxite and Alumina and other clients, including local authority departments on a number of GIS related projects. This included local site and regional data being collected from a variety of sources, the establishment of data storage mechanisms and presentation of readily manageable data on a graphical system. This, in many cases, was designed to allow public access to data and aid in communications with the general public or other stakeholders.
Ore Transport and Distribution Projects (Various), WA – Technical Advisor
Provided support on several large scale ore storage and transport facilities in areas of environmental management, acid sulphate soils, dredging and provided advice on requirements for site investigations. This included off-shore developments requiring involving the disturbance of marine areas for dredging activities and port developments.
Fuel Spills, WA – Project Director
For the investigation and management of diesel fuel spills at sensitive sites on WA, including a site adjacent to World Heritage location. Involved site investigation, remedial action planning and supervision of site activities. Providing support for annual reporting and review of environmental management activities in the area of fuel and oil handling and hazardous materials handling on-site.
Providing technical advice to oil and natural gas clients on matters related to environmental management, particularly in ground disturbing activities.
BP (various locations), UK - Project Manager and Site Engineer
For the investigation, assessment and remediation of numerous fuel depot sites across the UK. This included the liaison with local government environmental regulators and development of remedial strategies to allow BP to exit the property sale with limited liabilities in the future.
Goldmine, WA – Project Director
Provided alternative approach to goldmine client for mine expansion project that required site clearance and management of potential contamination.
Burntisland, Scotland – Project Manager
For the demolition and remediation of 20+ hectare industrial chemical plant in urban environment. Mitigation of human and groundwater risk through combination of source removal, in-situ treatment of high caustic content soils and rock and encapsulation. This work rendered the site safe for the development of housing and the close liaison with regulators and key stakeholders including the local community and council.
France – Alumina Facility
Provided site advice during post acquisition of facilities in France including discussions on tailings storage facility rehabilitation, plant closures and possibility of decommissioning a bauxite residue disposal pipeline located in the Mediterranean.
